One of the directors of Ashtanga Yoga Montreal, Allison Ulan has been a practitioner and enthusiast of yoga since 1988. She founded the Ashtanga Yoga Studio in 2000 with Mark Darby. From 2009 to 2016, the studio has transformed with co-owner Jeanne Mudie to embrace the varied aspects of Yoga.
In 1992, she discovered the Ashtanga Yoga method and it’s profound method captured her heart. She studied Ashtanga and Iyengar in New York City with Sharon Gannon, Mary Dunn and Richard Freeman. From 2000 to 2009, she traveled to Mysore, India to study annually with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. He authorized her to teach the Ashtanga form in its traditional approach in 2004. She is deeply grateful to all her teachers past and present, and grateful for having studied under and known Guruji as a teacher and friend. Guruji was a person of great compassion and wisdom.
Alongside her yoga studies, Allison has been studying and integrating Vipassana meditation and Ayurveda into her practice and classes since 1999. She instructs weekly classes and specialized workshops/teacher trainings in asana, pranayama and meditation. Participants have found her approach balanced, practical, humorous, informed and always heart-centered. Plus, students find her anatomical approach to teaching asana accessible and educational.
Her aim is to offer an insightful approach to Yoga as a holistic therapy to help each person discover what correct combination of exercise, meditation, nutrition and rest balances their being for full awakening.
She has been featured in local and nation wide media:
CBC Radio, The New Yorker Magazine, The Montreal Gazette, The Edmonton Journal, The Calgary Herald, Yoga Mondo, Canadian Living, and Chatelaine.
